China Highlights - Discovery Your Way! (Since 1959)

For me the highlight was the local (free) theatre in Elephant Trunk Hill Park with minority dancing put on for locals..
Li River Cruise (obviously) and Reed Flute Cave
Be prepared for a lot of European tourists in Guilin. Many of the attractions are beautiful - but overloaded. You will need to see through the tourism of it all to see the beauty of what is on offer.
Must be one of the best active (growing) caves around the world (and I have been to a few). Put the light shows and many many interpretaions of shapes (the lion, window looking out etc) behind you and awe at the magnificent limestone cave structures.

great local park. see the touristy things but then take an hour to wander around the park, watch the street entertainment, and soak up local China.
Regularly during the day, minority Zhong and Yao dances performed on a stage. Free. For locals. Excellent.

Exercise time. For the first time all around China my young guide beat me to the top!!
You get a view, but the climb it what is worth it.

Given the number of tourist buses heading out to the wharf I was starting to dread the day.
But not like that at all. Many boats - but they spread out. Many European tourists, but we all fitted in well, and the exquiste scenery just went on for hours.
I find it a bit difficult seeing how every hill is translated into an animal feature with a history. But that is just China!
This trip is close to one of the world's wonders and it is well worth doing.

Got caught in a section they were renovating with noisy extractor fans etc. Room moved and upgraded with many apologies when complained (through guide). So all ended well.
Avoid 8.00am for breakfast. The dining room is not large enough and it is a real bun fight of Europeans. By 8.30am you have the room to yourself.

Actually ate at McFound instead. NOT McDonalds (although sued by them).
Good basic Chinese food - specializing in dumplings, which were excellent.
Also the egg plane (aubergine) in sauce as a vegetable.
