New Terracotta Warriors Dig Begins in Xi’an, Tourists can see the Excavation
A new Terracotta Warriors dig has going on in Xi’an, China since June 13. The dig will last for half a year and tourists can witness the excavation in progress.
The famous Terracotta Warriors are life-size clay figures created to protect the tomb of China’s first emperor Qin Shihuang in the afterlife. They were first uncovered in 1978, 2000 years after they were created. Called the Eighth Wonder of the World, they are among China’s biggest tourist draws. Now Chinese archaeologists have begun the third dig of the Terracotta Warriors after a 24-year break. The extension of this excavation is 2152 square foot patch within the tomb’s main pit, Pit Number One and expects to uncover 11 statues.
What can we expect?
1. Elaborate Painted Clay figures
The technique for preserving clay’s painted details has quickly developed during the past decades in China. Painted clay figures will be carefully protected from fading during the procedure of excavation.
2. Ancient Weapons of the Qin Dynasty
Chinese archaeologists said that more ancient weapons of the Qin Dynasty, in addition to the halberds unearthed before, would be uncovered during this excavation.
3. Clay Figures of High-Ranking Officers
The majority of the Terracotta Army figures uncovered are archers, infantryman and charioteers. Chinese archaeologists hope to find more clay figures of high-ranking officers.
4. Clay Figures of Foreign people
According to history record, there might have been frequent communication between Europe and China during Qin Dynasty. The possibility that there are foreigners in Qin Shihuang’s army exists.
5. Clay Figures with Green Faces
Among the unearthed terracotta figures, clay figures with green faces are especially eye-catching. Was it a common practice of the craftsmen? Is it possible to uncover more clay figures with green faces or blue faces this time?
