Shanghai, the largest city in China, is an amazing mix of the ancient and hi-tech western civilization. It is a multi-cultural metropolis with both modern and traditional Chinese features. Festivals list:
Formula One(Apr. 17-Apr. 19, 2009): F1 is the abbreviation for Formula 1. In China, it is called the Class One Formula Race. The cars, which are made according to the same formula, are called Formula race. Among those classes, the top one is Formula 1. At present, the popularity of the F1 can be compared with the Olympics and the World Cup. Now there are ten racing teams. Every race, there are 20 drivers attending at most and each year there are 16 to 19 races. The race usually starts on the middle of the March and ends on the end of October. Each race can attract more than one billion audiences seeing it through TV and other mass medium.
The City Temple Fair(Feb. 8-Feb. 10, 2009): The City Temple in Shanghai enjoys a great reputation at home and abroad. It holds a series of temple fairs all year round due to the large number of temples and deities. Around the fifteenth day of the first month in China’s lunar calendar, (the Lantern Festival) each year, all shops and residences near the City Temple will hang ingenious lanterns in diverse shapes, like ingot, cornucopia, boats, lotus, bats, butterflies and toads, made of glass, and other lanterns like revolving scenic lanterns, rabbits, crabs, carps, shells, windmills made of silk or paper. Besides, some riddles will be hung on lanterns. What is more, both performances of “literary lanterns” and “military lanterns” will be held in streets. “Literary lanterns” performance team starts with south Yangzi string and pipe music (traditional stringed and woodwind instruments), followed by colorful paper lanterns with the shape of an umbrella. “Military lanterns” performance team is led by a strong rhythm of drums and gongs

Suzhou

Renowned as "Venice of the East" and "Heaven on Earth", Suzhou is famous for its unique, elegant gardens, its network of rivers and canals, and its silk production. The water towns near the city are the must-see and highlights.

Cold Mountain Temple New Year Bell(Jan. 25-Jan. 25, 2009): The Cold Mountain Temple near Fengqiao ancient town will hold the ceremony of striking bells when a new year is coming. When the 108th bell rings and extends afar, it welcomes the new year with echoes from all directions.
Huqiu Temple Fair(Sep. 1-Oct. 1, 2009): The Huqiu Temple Fair has been celebrated for 13 years till 2006. During the temple fair, two temple showcases would be held every day on the Qianren Rock (Qianren Rock is a huge stone with a plain surface on which thousands of people can stand.) In the showcases performances like folk arts, puppetry, traditional music, acrobatics and wrestling are given in celebration of the harvest season. Besides, a huge market offers every customer tens of thousands of varieties of goods.
Suzhou Taihu Lake Plum Blossom Festival(Mar. 21-Mar. 31, 2009): Suzhou Taihu Lake Plum Blossom Festival Suzhou has been a well-known place for plum blossoms in China since ancient times, and has developed a rich plum culture. The place “Linwo Mei Hai “ has become the largest base for plum visiting and plum culture. The Taihu Lake Plum Blossom Festival with “plum” as the theme organizes a variety of large-scale folk cultural activities, in order to share with travelers the symbolic meaning of the mountain and the lake and the flower and the snow.
Immortal Day(May. 8-May. 8, 2009): Immortal Day is one of Suzhou traditional festivals. April 14 of the lunar year is the birthday of Lu Dongbin—a famous Taoist priest in Tang Dynasty (one of the “Eight Immortals” in Chinese mythology) also known as the “immortal’s birthday”. It is believed that the day sees Lu Dongbin , the immortal, hide in the bustling crowd. Whoever has a strange refractory disease would be destined to meet him and be cured by him. Everyone wants to take this chance, and to be blessed by the immortal. So the day is known as the Immortal Day. Nowadays the day has become a kind of folk custom and a tourism brand in Suzhou with temple fairs, fashion and cultural shows and folk art performances. Besides, many a vendor dealing in colorful snacks, crafts, flowers, birds and fish will gather along streets.
Suzhou International Silk Festival(Sep. 20-Sep. 25, 2009): A series of celebration activities with local cultural charm are being held, including large economy and trade talks, the Tiger Hill Temple Fair and the Tianping Red Maple Art Festival, to attract foreign investments and to promote sales. It has been provided various opportunities through tourism for the trade and economy of this city

West Lake Expo(Dec. 6-Dec. 25, 2009): The First West Lake Expo was held in 1929 and has currently become the most famous festival displaying Hangzhou history, culture and scenery. There will held dozens of exhibitions, forums and performances, covering culture, art, fashion, technology, business, tourism food and other aspects.
West Lake International Fireworks Festival(Oct. 10-Oct. 31, 2009): Fireworks inverted in the West Lake form a stunning scene.
West Lake Lotus Festival(Jul. 1-Aug. 1, 2009): "Enjoying the beauty of lotus flowers, picking up seedpods of the lotus, peeling seedpods, cooking lotus meal, listening to folk drama, lighting lotus lanterns, Miss West Lake Lotus Photo Model Competition, and the Chinese lotus species exhibitions ".
Xihu (West Lake) Mid-Autumn Festival Evening Party(Oct. 2-Oct. 6, 2009): During the night of Mid-autumn Festival visitors can enjoy the performances like local dancing, acrobatics and folk music, while having a special dinner.

Huangshan

With its superlative natural beauty Yellow Mountain has been a place where people come to paint, and meditate. People come to Yellow Mountain to seek retreat. Sheer cliffs, twisted pine trees, hot springs and clouds make up the highlights of the mountain.

Yi County Tourism and Photography Festival(Nov. 8-Nov. 9, 2009): Every November 8 to 9 when the famous “Tachuan Autumn”, one of top three beautiful autumn scenes in China comes, the Tachuan Photography Festival is held. During the festival, several activities such as a grand opening ceremony, folk performances, “the ancient Yi Charm” theme Photography exhibition, “villages in painting” Photography Competition will take place.
Shexian Boating Festival(Oct. 18-Nov. 17, 2009): When Shexian Boating Festival comes, local fishermen will tie two wooden boat together horizontally, shed off their roofs, and construct pavilions, towers, halls, Courts, archways with bamboo and wood. Candles are lit and local bands are seated in the boats. When darkness approaches, six pairs of boats take the bands floating on the local river, Lianjiang River throughout a whole night. The lighting boats are called Shuiyou (Water Parade), while that people on the bank carrying lanterns is called Hanyou (Land Parade). Both parades integrate with each other and always attract residents nearby to watch.
