Mutianyu Great Wall is located 80 km (2.5 hours' drive) to the north-east of Beijing. It was built during the Ming Dynasty, 600 years ago. This 2-km-long portion of the Great Wall has 22 watchtowers, about one every kilometer, on overlapping mountain ranges. The highest tower has an altitude of about 540 meters. As one of the best preserved parts of the Great Wall, Mutianyu used to serve as the northern barrier, defending the capital and the imperial tombs. This section has fewer visitors than Badaling.
