When internet buzzwords like "magical 8D" and "cyberpunk" are closely associated with a city, and when the brilliant lights of Hongya Cave spark a craze for check-ins online, along with the aroma of hot pot wafting from every street corner to every corner of the world, Chongqing - a charming city - is attracting travelers from all over the globe.
The karst wonders of Wulong is approximately 130 kilometers (about 81 miles) from Chongqing. Many travelers choose to visit these two destinations in a single trip because they offer a unique blend of urban and natural experiences.
As a native of Chongqing and an English tour guide with over a decade of experience, I can't wait to lead you through this travel guide to unlock the most authentic and enjoyable ways to explore Chongqing, making your trip easy and wonderful!

Hi, I'm Christine. Born and raised in Chongqing, I've witnessed its transformation from a foggy river port to an 8D cyberpunk metropolis. I believe that guiding is a form of storytelling. My tours blend historical accuracy with local legends, served with a side of Chongqing humor. Expect interactive dialogues, not monologues!

How to Get from Chongqing to Wulong?

It takes about 2 hours to drive from Chongqing to Wulong Town, and an additional hour to reach Wulong Fairy Mountain from there. The scenery along the way is picturesque, providing a sense of freedom and comfort.
You can also choose to take the high-speed rail, which only takes 2 hours to arrive. However, after arrival, you will need to transfer to a bus to reach the Tourist Center.
Therefore, renting a car or taking a private tour is often the most reliable option. You can check our 7-Day Chongqing and Chengdu Tour, which includes Wulong and Dazu, for inspiration.
Is It Possible to Visit Wulong from Chongqing in Just One Day?
It is possible to make a round trip to Wulong from Chongqing in one day; however, the departure time will need to be relatively early.
Generally, you will leave the hotel around 7:30 AM in the morning and return around 8 or 9 o'clock in the evening, depending on the duration of your visits to scenic spots and the flow of tourists.
The travel time by car can be lengthy. If you want to save time, consider packing your own lunch to return to Chongqing earlier.
Thus, I recommend staying in Wulong for one night, which will make your itinerary more relaxed and enjoyable.
A Best Recommended Chongqing and Wulong Itinerary
A duration of 5 days is ideal for a comfortable and in-depth trip to Chongqing and Wulong.
If you have more time, you can take a 4-day Three Gorges cruise to see the Yangtze River's Three Gorges, or you can take a high-speed rail from Chongqing to Chengdu to see the pandas.
Day 1: Encountering the Fireworks and Prosperity of the Mountain City
Generally, you will arrive in Chongqing by plane or high-speed rail. If you arrive by plane, there is only one exit, and your tour guide will be waiting for you there.
If you arrive by high-speed rail, confirm the specific railway station and the location where your tour guide will meet you in advance.
After arriving in Chongqing, it is recommended to check into a hotel near the Jiefangbei Business District. Jiefangbei is a landmark and commercial center of Chongqing, with convenient transportation that allows you to easily reach various scenic spots.

At night, you can stroll through the streets and experience the lively atmosphere of the mountain city.
Day 2: Exploring the Unique Charm of the 8D Magical City
Morning:
- Kuixing Building: Its unique architectural structure allows you to experience the magical feeling of "the ground floor being the 22nd floor," making it an excellent spot for photos and check-ins.

- Jiefangbei: This Monument to the Victory of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the People's Liberation Monument carries the historical memory of Chongqing. Surrounded by tall buildings, it showcases the city's prosperity. Nearby, Bayi Road Food Street is filled with a variety of local snacks such as hot and sour noodles, Shancheng small tangyuan (sweet dumplings), and braised chicken claws to satisfy your taste buds.

Afternoon:
- Mountain City Alley: The cliff plank road and the unique style of old Chongqing capture the essence of the city. Here, you can understand why Chongqing is called the mountain city.

- Huguang Guild Hall: The largest ancient immigrant architectural complex in China, featuring exquisite carvings and unique architectural style, holds great historical and cultural value and is also a great place for photos.

Evening:
The Night View of Hongya Cave: Many believe that the best night view of Hongya Cave can only be enjoyed when you arrive there. In fact, the best vantage point is near the Chongqing Grand Theater on the opposite side of the river.

Day 3: Feeling the Blending of History and Modernity
Morning:
- Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum: (Make an appointment in advance through the official WeChat account; closed on Mondays). I highly recommend the Majestic Three Gorges Hall on the first floor and the Chongqing City Evolution exhibit on the second floor.

- Chongqing People's Great Hall: An imitation of the Temple of Heaven, located directly opposite the Three Gorges Museum. The green glazed tile roof and red columns create a magnificent sight. The best check-in point is on the platform at the entrance of the Three Gorges Museum.

Afternoon:
- Take Line 2 of the light rail to experience the wonderful sight of the light rail passing through the building at Liziba Station, where you can also take great photos from the viewing platform.

- Testbed 2: Transformed from old factories, it is full of an industrial and artistic atmosphere, featuring various characteristic stores and creative studios. Here, you can enjoy afternoon tea, experience Chongqing's characteristic Sichuan pepper ice cream, and embrace the artistic and leisurely life of the mountain city.

- Ciqikou Ancient Town: A lively thousand-year-old ancient town. Enter from the main gate and stroll along the main street, tasting characteristic foods such as Ciqikou Chen's Mahua (fried dough twist) and Mao Xuewang (a spicy blood curd dish), and soak in the ancient town's vibrant atmosphere. If you have enough time, you can also visit Baolun Temple to pray for blessings and explore the quiet corners of the ancient town.

Day 4: Appreciating the Karst Wonders of Wulong
Morning:
Depart from the urban area around 7:30 AM, take a short break at a service area along the way, and expect to arrive at the Visitor Center of Wulong Fairy Mountain around 11:30 AM.
Afternoon:
Fairy Mountain National Forest Park: Take a small train to tour the prairie. I remember my first visit to Fairy Mountain on a summer day a decade ago. The sky was as blue as sapphire, and the grassland was as green as a painting.
The lovely little sheep wandered leisurely on the grassland, making me feel as if I had stepped into a beautiful painting and didn't want to wake up.
In the late afternoon (3:00-5:00 PM), the softer light enhances the natural beauty of the grasslands. The views are particularly stunning as the sun begins to set.

Evening:
Stay in Wulong Fairy Town.
Day 5: Dancing with Nature
Morning:
- Three Natural Bridges: This filming location for "Curse of the Golden Flower" and "Transformers 4" showcases the essence of the karst landform. The walking tour takes about 3 hours and includes 400 descending steps. Visitors with limited mobility can opt for a sedan chair. Early morning (8:00-10:00 AM) is the best time for photography, as the light is soft and the crowds are thinner.

- Longshui Gorge Scenic Area: The deep canyon and waterfalls offer an adventure in the center of the earth. The walking tour takes about 1.5 hours and mainly involves descending steps. Non-slip shoes are recommended (this part is not friendly for the elderly or those with limited mobility).

Afternoon:
Return to your hotel in the urban area of Chongqing.

Other Scenic Spots in Chongqing
Yangtze River Cableway:
Experience the unique charm of the first aerial corridor of the Yangtze River. It is recommended to board at the South Station of the cableway, where there are fewer people and shorter queues. A one-way trip is sufficient to enjoy the scenery on both sides of the Yangtze River.

A paradise for panda lovers, home to many adorable national treasure pandas. Internet-famous pandas like "Sixi Wanzi" (Four Delights Meatballs) are particularly eye-catching. Children and animal lovers shouldn't miss it.

Chongqing 1949:
An immersive large-scale red-themed stage play that transports you back to an era filled with wars, allowing you to feel the heroic struggles of the people in Chongqing and the profound history of the city.
