Research suggests that a strong earthquake millions of years ago caused a crack in the mountains of the Loess Plateau. Long-term erosion by rainwater gradually shaped the unique canyon landscape.
At Ganquan Grand Canyon, you can experience unique Danxia landforms, magnificent canyon scenery, and lush vegetation.
You can also engage in activities like hiking and rock climbing. Its tranquil environment makes it ideal for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and outdoor sports lovers.
Planning a Trip to Ganquan Grand Canyon from Xi'an
For a trip to Ganquan Grand Canyon from Xi'an I recommend either a one-day or two-day tour. Personally, I believe the two-day tour is more preferable.
One-Day Tour:
- Depart from the hotel at 7:30 AM, drive approximately 4 hours to the canyon. Have lunch at Tofu Town (20 km away) or at the visitor service center. Spend 3-4 hours sightseeing, then return to Xi'an around 6 PM.
Two-Day Tour:
- Day 1: Depart at 7:30 AM, drive 2 hours to visit the Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor for 2 hours. Then drive 2.5 hours to the Hukou Waterfall, visit for 2-3 hours after lunch. Drive to Yan'an and stay overnight.
- Day 2: After breakfast, depart at 8:00 AM, drive 1.5 hours to the canyon for a 3-hour visit. Have lunch at Tofu Town, then return to Xi'an around 5 PM.

Ganquan Grand Canyon in summerBased on my personal experience I find that the the best times to visit the Guanquan Grand Canyon are summer and autumn.
- Summer (June to August): Moderate temperatures, lush vegetation, and vibrant greenery, ideal for hiking and photography.
- Autumn (September to October): Clear weather, colorful leaves, and magnificent scenery, perfect for photography and sightseeing.
During the day, the best times to visit are in the morning or early afternoon.
- Morning (8:00-10:00): Excellent lighting for photography with comfortable temperatures.
- Early Afternoon (13:00-16:00): Good lighting to showcase stunning scenery.
How to Get to Ganquan Grand Canyon
Ganquan Grand Canyon is 300 kilometers from Xi'an (about a 4-hour drive), 60 kilometers from Yan'an (1.5-hour drive), and 240 kilometers from Hukou Waterfall (3-hour drive). There is no direct public transportation, so driving is recommended. Traveling from Yan'an is more convenient.
